There are many Advents. The first Advent was the coming of Christ in great humility at Christmas. Phillip Brooks described it so beautifully in his hymn, "O Little Town of Bethlehem".
"How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive Him in, still the dear Christ enters in."
I don't suppose there is ever a convenient time to have a baby. The most wonderful baby in the world was born at a most inconvenient time; his parents were on a journey by donkey to pay income tax. Children were not deductible. Jesus was born in a stable or a cave, and placed in a manger in the little town of Bethlehem. Thank God that He did not wait for a convenient time to come to us at that first Advent. We can be grateful that He did not wait until we were ready to receive Him or good enough to deserve His love. There was no reservation made for them at the royal suite at the Bethlehem Hilton, no mayor, no city council, no municipal band to greet Him and Mary and Joseph. Jesus comes to us today. Now is the acceptable time to receive Him. It may not be a convenient time, but we must choose now before it is too late. Christmas is a birth... the coming of new life in you. Prayer: How great Thou art, O God, when voices carol the happy sounds of December, and fir trees smell of green mountains. Lead us back to Bethlehem and the Christ child, for whom the bells, and stars, and carols, and poinsettias give praise. How great Thou art! Now cover us with your wings of hope as a mother spreads a blanket of love over a sleeping child. Be with those who grieve, who are sick. Help us now to sink into your love. Through the amazing grace of Jesus. Amen. |
