12/28/2009 - Music of a Thankful Heart

"Begin the day with music." These words often appear in advertisements of radios, especially those with built-in alarm clocks. The clock can be set for a certain time in the morning, and the sleeper will be awakened by music from the radio. It is a good idea-to begin the day with music of another sort. Begin with the music of a thankful heart, the response of heart and mind to God's gift of a new day.

The Swiss theologian, Emil Brunner, has compared thankfulness to swimming. He writes, "So long as there is air in the lungs, we do not sink. So long as we cherish thankfulness to God in our hearts, the heavy load will not bear us down. Hence, let us be careful to see that air remains in our lungs and gratitude does not melt away." Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote, "some people die with their music still in them," Friend of Dial Hope, don't let that happen to you. Share the music of your heart, your faith. Remember, the Gospel is never boring, never ho-hum. It is always TA-DA. Begin and end the day with music, the music of a thankful heart.

Prayer:  Great God of hope, we thank you for the music of our faith. When life becomes tough, when the going is rough, save us from despair. Let not the umbrella of forgetfulness prevent us from remembering and being refreshed by the showers of blessings that are ours. Lord, what are you up to today? We want to be part of it. Help us this day to walk with hope and gratitude. In the spirit of Jesus, the Christ, we pray. Amen.
