01/17/2010 - When Things Go Wrong

When things go wrong, we may or may not be responsible for the cause. But one thing is certain; We are responsible for the result, and the result depends on how we meet the situation, how we respond to trouble. There are two possibilities; We can respond either with cowardice or with courage. We can respond with weakness or strength, with bitterness or betterness. How easy it is sometimes to choose the way of cowardice, to give in to self-pity, to quit on life...to blame God and die - maybe not physically, but emotionally, spiritually. Instead of tossing in the towel, we can choose the way of courage, by trusting in God to bring it out right. When things go wrong, we must choose the way of courage. We must go on with life, doing the best we can, living one day at a time. The psalmist did not say, "I will meet no evil"; he said, "I will fear no evil." Psychologists tell us that we always have two conflicting desires; the temptation to shrink back and quit on life, to give in to cowardice and bitterness and self-pity, or the challenge to move forward, through struggle and effort and courage and perseverance, to a deeper dimension of life. Friend of Dial Hope may God give you the courage this day to choose life.

Prayer: God of love, we have built tall structures that scratch the sky and buildings that proclaim grace and beauty, but we have neglected our inner frame, our foundation. Remold us and make us sound. May we be stripped clean of our pretensions and be made solid from top to bottom and back to front. Let our boasting be sanded down to humility, our arrogance planed into integrity, and our words, "my will be done" changed to "Thy will be done." Fill us with joy and gratitude that we may hear again, "Well done, faithful servant, enter into my joy." In the name of Christ, our Redeemer. Amen.
