01/25/2010 - Love to Sing

Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, "Some people die with their music still in them." Friend of Dial a Hope, Christians love to sing because we have a faith worth singing about! Personally, I'm eclectic in my appreciation of music. I love camp songs, folk songs, French carols, the majestic anthems of Bach and Randall Thompson, the gospel songs of Fannie Crosby, Handel's "Messiah," Newton's "Amazing Grace," the exuberant music of Mozart and the powerful hymns of Charles Wesley. And yet, some of the most moving expressions of the faith come out of African culture.

"Go tell it on the mountain,
over the hills and everywhere;
go tell it on the mountain,
that Jesus Christ is born."

Over and over in these spirituals we hear the powerful theme of Resurrection. Death is not the end, but the beginning. This is the good news, the TA-DA! Of our faith. We don't have to die with our music still in us. We have faith to sing about. So make today a masterpiece.

Prayer: Awesome God, help us to stand on tiptoe as we celebrate the music of our faith. Help us to bring hope and love and joy into the lives of others that we may share the faith that moves mountains and the belief that banishes sorrow. Be especially with those calling from helicopters in Baghdad and watch over the men and woman serving our country in Afghanistan and other far away places. Be with their families back home and be with the people of those countries. We pray for peace, especially in the Middle East. In the name of the rise Christ, Amen.
