01/30/2010 - A Sense of Humor?

Did it ever occur to you that God has a sense of humor? How do I know this? Every morning when I get up and look in the mirror - I know God has a great sense of humor. And that, friend of Dial Hope, is a real TA-DA!

With that thought as background I want to go out on a limb and suggest that we do away with perfection. The passage n the Sermon on the Mount, "the perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Is actually misleading and obtuse. The Greek word for perfect, telias, does not mean perfection, but wholeness.
To often religion demands the frantic, fruitless, pursuit of perfection. We clobber ourselves, as well as others, by seeking an elusive perfection. The truth is that perfection of any kind is impossible everywhere. Our aspiration should be to become whole persons whose bodies, minds, and spirits are co-ordinated - individuals who, recognizing our blemishes and flaws, try to transform them. God has double vision. God sees us as we are but God also sees who we can become through Jesus Christ.

Let us Pray:  God of love, thank you for our humanness. Thank you for calling us, not to be perfect, but faithful and whole. We pour ouyt our thanks for your steadfast love that endures forever. You provide springs of living water to refresh us. May a generous people of God joyously say - Amen.
