A woman who taught Sunday School for many years received an unexpected letter one day from a young man in the hospital. "You probably don't remember me," he wrote. "But I visited your Sunday school class when I was staying with my grandparents during the summer of 1978. You were kind to me. Because of you, I became a Christian, and my faith has been so very important to me, especially now that I have been diagnosed with cancer. So, I just wanted to write and tell you thanks." She didn't remember the young man at all, but when she searched her 1978 diary, she came across this notation: "We had a visitor in class today. He was a handful. He couldn't sit still. I sat beside him and gave him some extra attention. Don't know whether I did him any good or not."
As Christians, we rarely know when we are successful. Our calling is to be faithful, to sow the seed, to live our faith every day to do the best we can and to trust God to bring it out right. The answer of course it to trust God... trust God. Trust God.
Prayer: God of grace and God of glory, grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the living of all our days. Help us to trust in your care. Fill us with joy and love for life. We are to be the hands, the feet, the eyes, the ears, the mouth, the heart of Jesus in the world today. Inspire us to put our love into practice with gentleness and humility. On this Super Bowl Sunday, let us remember that persons are more important than points, that serving others is more important than Super Bowls, that worship is more important than winning. Let us remember that every Sunday is a Super Sunday. Refresh us now with your blessings. Surprise us with your grace in unexpected places. Through Jesus, the Christ, in whose spirit we pray. Amen. |
