02/20/2010 - Awe, Humility and Trust

Friend of Dial Hope, in our media savy and quick fix world, focus today on this passage from Proverbs 1:7, “The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.” In your daily walk with God, consider these words: awe, humility, and trust. AWE…The fear or the respect of the Lord begins with the basic commitment that God is God and that we are not God. God is not in our control, not to be placed in a box by our desires. The title of a classic book by J.B. Phillips says it clearly, Your God Is Too Small.

HUMILITY…There will always be more to God than we can understand. As God says in Isaiah, “My ways are not your ways, and my thoughts not your thoughts” (Isajah 55:8). Abraham Lincoln best describes humility in this reply to a question about the validity of the nothern cause, “The question is not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on God’s side.” TRUST…Recognizing that God is God and standing before God in humility, we are called, thirdly, to trust. Karl Barth once said that the easiest definition of faith is trust. We are called to trust God, b ecause God has revealed to us God’s amazing capacity to be “for us.” Even though there is much we may not understand, or much less comprehend, the fear of respect of the Lord invites us to trust God and God’s intentions of thew world. Today in our walk with God, be guided by awe, humility and trust.
